The Pokemon GO craze is like nothing I have seen before.

We were in a small group of about 20 people waiting our turn to finally go up the elevator to the top. Three different groups within that larger group were all playing Pokemon GO. The elevator operator had little to say about the CN Tower buy had some advice on using Stardust for each of the groups and was lamenting that the CN Tower had gone ‘blue’ after 3 days of being steadily ‘red’ – this was before Pokemon GO was on any Canadian App site!

So ‘addiction’ is real. ’Kids’ of all ages are setting lures, battling in gyms and searching for Pokemon (I am not sure of the plural spelling).

I have seen other fads come and go, it is difficult to tell if this is one of the fads that will be here for a long time or whether it will have a fleeting lifespan. Zynga Inc. still has a large market cap but never lived up to the early hype around the IPO. King Digital Entertainment PLC was another company that really never lived up to the initial hype (and I do play Candy Crush to kill time but never spend a dime on the game).

Peter Lynch is famous for many things, including his view that one should invest in what you know.

So when looking at Nintendo stock
•The fad is real, but I am already seeing some signs of it dying down
•Turning addictive on-line games into revenue (above and beyond what is already priced in) is difficult
•Nintendo though does have a long track record and a great brand
•The underlying technology which my understanding has a stake in may be very adaptable which would increase its value, but we have not seen how easy it may be to copycat

So I for one am left struggling whether this is really something revolutionary that I can still participate in at a relatively early stage or whether the market has already priced in more than the stock can deliver.

It does highlight just how accessible the entire world is now – which is truly exciting and definitely food for thought in terms of what other ‘old’ or even ‘tired’ companies and technologies may be out there and ready to exploit.
